On February 13, 2009, The Arts Council of Carteret County (ACCC) will open its signature annual event, Art From The Heart, an exhibition and sale of original artwork created by artists from Carteret, Craven, Pamlico and Onslow counties. Art From the Heart will remain open to the public until Saturday, February 28th.
The location for this year’s show will be the former Carteret News-Times building located at 4034 Arendell Street, Morehead City (across from the Hampton Inn). Admission to the gallery will be free.
A non-juried show, Art From the Heart 2009 is open to artists at all levels of expertise. As in past years, entry categories will include oils and acrylics; watermedia; photography and computer generated art; glass, stone, fiberarts and other three dimensional artwork; pastels and drawings; and mixed media.
Judging Art From the Heart 2009 will be Pamela Jane Rogers, an internationally acclaimed artist and art teacher from Poros, Greece. Born in Winston Salem and a former resident of Morehead City, Ms. Rogers holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in painting from UNC at Greensboro. She has also studied at East Carolina University as well as the New York Art Student’s League, the Vermont Studio Colony, and with renowned NC artist Jaquelin Jenkins (1934-1988) of Elizabeth City.
Ms Rogers taught art history, theory, and painting courses at private and public schools, Arts Centers, and Community College in her native North Carolina. She has illustrated several books on travel and mythology and has organized artists’ workshops since 1988.
Ms Roger’s interest in Greece, philosophically and culturally, prompted her to move to Poros Island in 1990, where she continues painting and advising on educational tours for American and Canadian University Alumni visiting Greece. Her representational and symbolic paintings in various media have been exhibited widely and won awards in North Carolina and Virginia art exhibits. Her paintings are included in private and corporate collections throughout the world, including one in Buckingham Palace.
Pamela Rogers is represented in the US by City Art Gallery of Greenville, NC. Her artwork can be viewed online at , www.absolutearts/portfolios/p/pamporos,

A showcase for the talents of local artists, Art from the Heart 2008 was the Arts Council’s most popular and heavily attended event. One hundred and thirty four artists participated and nearly three hundred and fifty pieces of original artwork were entered. During the two week exhibition an estimated twenty two hundred visitors passed through the gallery.
According to Lee Lumpkin, ACCC board member and chair of this year’s show, Art From The Heart 2008 was so successful that the board decided to use the same format for 2009.
“In recent years we have been able to consolidate Art From The Heart with a student art show presented by the public schools of Carteret County,” Lumpkin says.
“Essentially, we presented the two shows side-by-side in the same building. This has contributed greatly to the success of both exhibits. It afforded gallery visitors opportunities to see artwork at all stages of development and levels of expertise.”
Mr. Lumpkin further acknowledged the contribution of the Carteret County News-Times in allowing the Arts Council to use its property. “Since the Arts Council doesn’t own a building, we’ve come to rely on the generosity of local property owners who have donated space for Art From The Heart. The former News-Times building is not only a wonderful location, but it is large enough for us to present the student show at the same time and place as Art From the Heart.”
An opening reception and awards ceremony for Art From The Heart will be held on Friday, February 13, 2009 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. The public is invited to drop in, meet the artists and tour the gallery. Admission to the reception is free.
