A Record Breaking Crowd for Business After Hours
The Chamber of Commerce teamed up with the Arts Council and had their Business After Hours event at Art From the Heart. Michael A. Wagoner, President of the Carteret County Chamber of Commerce said it best in an e-mail sent to all chamber members.
“I am not sure what the final attendance tally from last night will be…but it was nothing short of fantastic. Many, many compliments from the attendees!
It was an outstanding event…and we thank you and the Arts Council leadership and membership for hosting and sponsoring. I heard several people comment that they will return this weekend to view the art when there are fewer bodies in the building.
Kudos to all involved.”

On February 13, 2009, The Arts Council of Carteret County (ACCC) will open its signature annual event, Art From The Heart, an exhibition and sale of original artwork created by artists from Carteret, Craven, Pamlico and Onslow counties. Art From the Heart will remain open to the public until Saturday, February 28th.
The location for this year’s show will be the former Carteret News-Times building located at 4034 Arendell Street, Morehead City (across from the Hampton Inn). Admission to the gallery will be free.
A non-juried show, Art From the Heart 2009 is open to artists at all levels of expertise. As in past years, entry categories will include oils and acrylics; watermedia; photography and computer generated art; glass, stone, fiberarts and other three dimensional artwork; pastels and drawings; and mixed media.
Judging Art From the Heart 2009 will be Pamela Jane Rogers, an internationally acclaimed artist and art teacher from Poros, Greece. Born in Winston Salem and a former resident of Morehead City, Ms. Rogers holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in painting from UNC at Greensboro. She has also studied at East Carolina University as well as the New York Art Student’s League, the Vermont Studio Colony, and with renowned NC artist Jaquelin Jenkins (1934-1988) of Elizabeth City.
Ms Rogers taught art history, theory, and painting courses at private and public schools, Arts Centers, and Community College in her native North Carolina. She has illustrated several books on travel and mythology and has organized artists’ workshops since 1988.
Ms Roger’s interest in Greece, philosophically and culturally, prompted her to move to Poros Island in 1990, where she continues painting and advising on educational tours for American and Canadian University Alumni visiting Greece. Her representational and symbolic paintings in various media have been exhibited widely and won awards in North Carolina and Virginia art exhibits. Her paintings are included in private and corporate collections throughout the world, including one in Buckingham Palace.
Pamela Rogers is represented in the US by City Art Gallery of Greenville, NC. Her artwork can be viewed online at , www.absolutearts/portfolios/p/pamporos,

A showcase for the talents of local artists, Art from the Heart 2008 was the Arts Council’s most popular and heavily attended event. One hundred and thirty four artists participated and nearly three hundred and fifty pieces of original artwork were entered. During the two week exhibition an estimated twenty two hundred visitors passed through the gallery.
According to Lee Lumpkin, ACCC board member and chair of this year’s show, Art From The Heart 2008 was so successful that the board decided to use the same format for 2009.
“In recent years we have been able to consolidate Art From The Heart with a student art show presented by the public schools of Carteret County,” Lumpkin says.
“Essentially, we presented the two shows side-by-side in the same building. This has contributed greatly to the success of both exhibits. It afforded gallery visitors opportunities to see artwork at all stages of development and levels of expertise.”
Mr. Lumpkin further acknowledged the contribution of the Carteret County News-Times in allowing the Arts Council to use its property. “Since the Arts Council doesn’t own a building, we’ve come to rely on the generosity of local property owners who have donated space for Art From The Heart. The former News-Times building is not only a wonderful location, but it is large enough for us to present the student show at the same time and place as Art From the Heart.”
An opening reception and awards ceremony for Art From The Heart will be held on Friday, February 13, 2009 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. The public is invited to drop in, meet the artists and tour the gallery. Admission to the reception is free.

It’s been a very busy week considering I’m off from teaching at the college for semester break. I coordinated Art Camp sponsored by the Arts Council of Carteret County for about 50 kids between the ages of 10-15 years old. A group of children from the Boys and Girls club were able to attend the camp thanks to our Scholarship program. Even though it was hectic and a little exhausting at times the experience was also very rewarding for me and my excellent staff of art / photo teachers and volunteers.

It takes great patience to work with the middle school age group, but I must admit they loved drawing and painting, learning about photography and making digital images with Photoshop on the computer.

I was absolutely amazed at how quickly they picked up the imaging software and their computer literacy in general. I really enjoyed working with the kids and seeing what they all came up with on the computer, in addition to doing group abstract paintings with them the last day after my Art Appreciation presentation.

The kids and parents gave us very positive feedback about the camp so I suppose I’ll organize another one for next year. You never know how these experiences can impact and inspire some child – I don’t think young people get enough time in school to truly explore their creative side.

The Fall semester kicks back into gear with registration next week so looks like this has been a very short break for me – that’s ok though. Teaching art and photography to 50 enthusiastic and very creative kids was well worth it. This event is a great example of our Arts Council doing what it does best – putting on (and supporting) excellent arts programs for the community. More pictures will be posted early next week!

Art From the Heart
Annual Art Exhibit
by Patrick Keough
Its hard to believe the Arts Council of Carteret County just wrapped up its 18th Annual Art From the Heart members exhibit. These shows just keep getting bigger and better every year. I can remember helping coordinate and hang the first Art From the Heart fine arts exhibit in 1991. Seems like yesterday when local artist and ACCC VP Nancy Gore and I brought up the idea to the board as a way to increase membership in our fledgling organization and nurture the arts (and encourage local artists) in Carteret County. As the newly elected President of the Carteret Arts Council I was pleased and excited that the board voted to put on the show at Valentines Day, however Nancy and I had no idea how much work it would be to market, coordinate and actually hang a major art show. Especially when we didn’t even have a building to exhibit the work in. Luckily we were able to use the then vacant Silver Building for that first show.

Things somehow turned out well 18 years ago and the same holds true this year. Not only did Art From the Heart 2008 have a record number of art entries (340 works of art) we also had record numbers of “art enthusiasts” come out to view and enjoy the show and reception catered by Amos Mosquito’s. Over 500 people came out between the hours of 6-8 on Saturday night, February 16th night to enjoy the various mediums of very creative local art and meet the artists.
This years exhibit was judged by ECU School of Art Photography Professor Henry Stindt. Mr. Stindt has taught photography and graphic design at the School of Art for over 20 years and also owns and operates his own photography studio Stindt Photographic in Greenville, NC. The show itself was hung by photography and art students from Carteret Community College.
ACCC President Pam Cooper stated the following about this years show, “The Arts Council has been able to host ‘the Student Art Show’ in conjunction with Art from the Heart the past two years because of the generous donation of the old Carteret County News times building by Walter and Lockwood Phillips for the month needed to set up , show and take down the two exhibits. We have never had a better venue for Art From the Heart and never so much enthusiastic support from the community.”
The Arts Council of Carteret County has come a long way since those early days. The board is organizing an Arts Camp for middle school students this summer, a juried art show and festival during the Big Rock Tournament and has launched a very successful Adopt aN Artist program.

One hundred and fifteen artists participated and nearly three hundred pieces of original artwork were entered. During the two week exhibition an estimated nineteen hundred visitors passed through the gallery.
According to Lee Lumpkin, ACCC board member and chair of this year’s show, Art From The Heart 2007 was so successful that the board decided to use the same format for 2008.

Prior to the public opening, the Arts Council will host its annual fundraiser and preview party on Friday night, February 15th at the gallery from 7:00 until 10:00 pm. This event will feature live entertainment, delicious hors d’oeuvres, cocktails and a chance for all in attendance to enjoy the artwork, much of which will be for sale. Tickets for this special preview event will be available in January for $50 per person. Proceeds from the evening will help the Arts Council fund its projects for the coming year.
