Grants Available to Assist Area Groups with Arts Programming

The Arts Council of Carteret County is offering grants to Carteret County local art groups to assist with arts and cultural programming. These grants will be used to financially assist groups in providing quality arts programming to the citizens of Carteret County. Grassroots grants are intended to fund particular arts projects that will be completed by June 30, 2009. Programs can focus on theater, music, dance, writing, folk-life, or the visual arts. The Arts Council of Carteret County and the North Carolina Arts Council Grassroots Arts Program support the program; additional funding is received from the National Endowment for the Arts.

“The Grassroots Arts Program is one of the best ways to raise funds for arts organizations,” says Pam Cooper, President of the Arts Council of Carteret County. Applicants may be either arts organizations or community service organizations that develop arts projects for the general public or for traditionally under-served audiences. Applicants must be non-profit organizations that have federal 501 (c) tax-exempt status or units of local government, civic clubs, churches, schools, theater groups, arts festivals, boys & girls clubs, libraries, senior citizens’ centers, parks & recreation departments and other community-based groups are eligible to submit an application.

A grant panel consisting of Carteret County residents reads and selects grants to be funded. Awards are decided by assessing the overall impact to the citizens of Carteret County, the overall excellence of the program, as well as its practicality.

Art From the Heart
Annual Art Exhibit

Its hard to believe the Arts Council of Carteret County just wrapped up its 18th Annual Art From the Heart members exhibit. These shows just keep getting bigger and better every year. I can remember helping coordinate and hang the first Art From the Heart fine arts exhibit in 1991. Seems like yesterday when local artist and ACCC VP Nancy Gore and I brought up the idea to the board as a way to increase membership in our fledgling organization and nurture the arts (and encourage local artists) in Carteret County. As the newly elected President of the Carteret Arts Council I was pleased and excited that the board voted to put on the show at Valentines Day, however Nancy and I had no idea how much work it would be to market, coordinate and actually hang a major art show. Especially when we didn’t even have a building to exhibit the work in. Luckily we were able to use the then vacant Silver Building for that first show.

Things somehow turned out well 18 years ago and the same holds true this year. Not only did Art From the Heart 2008 have a record number of art entries (340 works of art) we also had record numbers of “art enthusiasts” come out to view and enjoy the show and reception catered by Amos Mosquito’s. Over 500 people came out between the hours of 6-8 on Saturday night, February 16th night to enjoy the various mediums of very creative local art and meet the artists.

This years exhibit was judged by ECU School of Art Photography Professor Henry Stindt. Mr. Stindt has taught photography and graphic design at the School of Art for over 20 years and also owns and operates his own photography studio Stindt Photographic in Greenville, NC. The show itself was hung by photography and art students from Carteret Community College.

ACCC President Pam Cooper stated the following about this years show, “The Arts Council has been able to host ‘the Student Art Show’ in conjunction with Art from the Heart the past two years because of the generous donation of the old Carteret County News times building by Walter and Lockwood Phillips for the month needed to set up , show and take down the two exhibits. We have never had a better venue for Art From the Heart and never so much enthusiastic support from the community.”

The Arts Council of Carteret County has come a long way since those early days. The board is organizing an Arts Camp for middle school students this summer, a juried art show and festival during the Big Rock Tournament and has launched a very successful Adopt aN Artist program.

It has been a very busy week for ACCC Board Members and Volunteers. Art and Photography Professor from East Carolina University School of Art spent almost 3 hours judging this expansive and diverse show. He commented about all the creative work coming out of Carteret County and surrounding areas.

Prior to the public opening, the Arts Council will host its annual fundraiser and preview party on Friday night, February 15th at the gallery from 7:00 until 10:00 pm. This event will feature live entertainment, delicious hors d’oeuvres, cocktails and a chance for all in attendance to enjoy the artwork, much of which will be for sale. Tickets for this special preview event will be available in January for $50 per person. Proceeds from the evening will help the Arts Council fund its projects for the coming year. Art From The Heart Update

At the close of the day there were approximately 350 submissions for Art From the Heart. 50 more than last year and 150 more than the year before.

Yes!!!…the talented artists from Carteret County and surrounding areas came out in droves to enter their work and support the ACCC and this very special local arts tradition. Make sure you attend the gala reception for this exciting exhibit next Saturday night, February 16th from 6:00 - 8:00pm.

The show is shaping up to be one of the BEST in recent years so don’t miss the opening. If you can’t make the reception the show will be open to the public for two weeks.

18th Annual ART FROM THE HEART Exhibition To Open February 16th

On February 16, 2008, The Arts Council of Carteret County (ACCC) will present its signature annual event, ART FROM THE HEART, an exhibition and sale of original artwork created by artists from Carteret, Craven, Pamlico and Onslow counties. Art From the Heart 2008 will remain open to the public until Saturday, March 1st .

The location for this year’s show will be the former Carteret News-Times office located at 4034 Arendell Street, Morehead City (across from the Hampton Inn). Admission to the gallery will be free.
As in past years, entry categories will include oils and acrylics; watermedia; photography and computer generated art; glass, fiberarts and three dimensional artwork; pastels and drawings; and mixed media. Judges for this year’s show will be announced in January.

A showcase for the talents of local artists, Art from the Heart 2007 was the Arts Council’s most popular and heavily attended event. One hundred and fifteen artists participated and nearly three hundred pieces of original artwork were entered. During the two week exhibition an estimated nineteen hundred visitors passed through the gallery.

According to Lee Lumpkin, ACCC board member and chair of this year’s show, Art From The Heart 2007 was so successful that the board decided to use the same format for 2008.

“2007 was the first year that we had the space to consolidate Art From The Heart with a student show presented by the public schools of Carteret County,” Lumpkin says. “Essentially, we ran the two shows side-by-side in the same building. This contributed greatly to the success of both exhibits. It afforded gallery visitors opportunities to see artwork at all stages of development and levels of expertise.”

Lumpkin acknowledged the contribution of the Carteret County News-Times in allowing the Arts Council to use its property. “Since the Arts Council doesn’t own a building, we’ve come to rely on the generosity of local property owners who have donated space for Art From The Heart. The former News-Times building is not only a wonderful location, but it is large enough for us to present the student show at the same time and place as Art From the Heart,” Lumpkin added.

An opening reception and awards ceremony for Art From The Heart will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2008 from 7:00 – 9:00 pm. The public is cordially invited to drop in, meet the artists and enjoy the show. Admission to the reception is free.

ACCC Launches
“Adopt an Artist”
The Arts Council of Carteret County (ACCC) is sponsoring a brand new program that partners local businesses and the arts community through a venue called “Adopt an Artist.” Given the keen interest from businesses who have expressed an interest to the ACCC about finding and displaying art and visual media for their walls and lobbies, Adopt an Artist provides a means by which businesses can select the artists whose work they wish to display from a list of artists who have registered with the ACCC their work for show.

It is anticipated that artwork selected through the Adopt an Artist venue will begin to be placed in local businesses beginning in November 2007. There is no fee to businesses for participating in this program; yet artists must be members in good standing with the ACCC. Both the businesses and the artists will sign an agreement to participate in the program for a six-month term. Artists will submit application to ACCC, along with non-returnable photographs of the artwork that they wish to display. Businesses will select the artwork for their venues from a catalog of these photographs. Selected artwork will be on display in a business for a period of two months. At the end of the two-month period, the business will receive the next artwork it selected.

Artists may sell their work through Adopt an Artist by placing prices on the artwork and negotiating sales directly with buyers. Neither businesses nor the ACCC will be involved in these sales, nor will they receive a commission.

Recent promotion regarding Adopt an Artist was sent to the entire Carteret County Chamber of Commerce mailing list of its business members. In addition, forms for businesses and artists who wish to participate in the program are posted on this ACCC website— Click on Adopt an Artist, complete the appropriate form, and submit it to the ACCC by mail. Artists must also submit photographs of their work by mailing them to ACCC, PO Box 2294, Morehead City, NC 28557. (The “Samples of Artwork” page from the application form must accompany the photos.) Direct any questions about the program to sally@promiselandphoto.com; type “Adopt an Artist” in the subject line.
