According to Carole Sadler and Marnie Park , co-chairpersons of the Designer Showcase program, “The Beaufort Woman’s Club is thrilled to have the opportunity to work with these talented designers. We have a once-in-a- lifetime opportunity to use the proceeds of the showcase house to purchase the landmark c.1726 Ward-Hancock House. As we raise the money, we will then donate this award - winning historic structure to the Friends of the N.C. Maritime Museum for the Old Beaufort Seaport at the Gallants Channel site.

When Beaufort was still in infancy, Richard Rustull (1669-1761) built this strong and sturdy little house which is currently known as the Ward-Hancock House.

The house is the earliest example of an 18th century gambrel roof house in eastern North Carolina. Many Beaufort Woman’s club members voice ”SAVE THE FIRST CUSTOM HOUSE –IT IS TRUE BEAUFORT HISTORY” . The historic house is truly a landmark property.

The Ward-Hancock House has more recently become an award-winning museum through the efforts of John and Virgina Costlow of Beaufort. Their unique adaptation of the house has earned recognition by Preservation North Carolina and national acclaim on the television series Restore America..

The Ward-Hancock house located on 3rd street in Beaufort will be open the first Saturday of the month from 12 to 4 and also on Saturday June 7 and Sunday June 8 from 12-5 to coincide with the Designer Showcase House. The house is one of several historic homes to be featured during the Beaufort Old Homes Tour June 27 and June 28. 2008. Tickets for the Beaufort Old Homes tour may be purchased by contacting Beaufort Historical Association 252 -728-5225.
